Polar成立于1993年，是美國南方航空運輸公司和通用資本航空服務(wù)公司（GE Capital Aviation Services，簡(jiǎn)稱(chēng)GECAS）的合資企業(yè)。它于1993年6月開(kāi)始運營(yíng)，開(kāi)始包機，后來(lái)增加了定期服務(wù)。1994年期間，極地航空貨運被美國聯(lián)邦航空管理局認定為受補充的航空承運人，1994年7月4日由美國運輸部認證為美國全貨運航空公司。經(jīng)過(guò)幾年的持續增長(cháng)，公司的其余部分被GECAS收購。 2001年11月，Polar被阿特拉斯航空全球控股（Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings，AAWW）收購，其Atlas Air子公司是ACMI（飛機，船員，維修和保險）貨物租賃的提供商。Polar成為AAWW的定期服務(wù)提供商，而Atlas繼續以濕租賃方式向主要航空公司供應波音747貨機。2006年10月，宣布DHL Express將收購Polar的49％股權。Polar仍然是阿特拉斯航空集團控股（51％）的多數股權，擁有736名員工（截至2007年3月）。
